PANAJI: The government is once again in the process of banning Ganesh idols made of plaster of paris in the state. Environment and forest minister Alina Saldanha said the government will issue the ban soon.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the Goa State Pollution Control Board's silver jubilee programme, Saldanha said "We will issue a ban on sale of Ganesh idols made of plaster of paris well in advance."

The minister said monitoring is essential during the ban period so that plaster of paris idols don't come in from neighbouring states. "We will look into the monitoring aspect," Saldanha added.

The state government had also banned the sale of plaster of paris idols last year and introduced eco-friendly Ganesh idols through the state handicraft corporation. Saldanha said the ban imposed proved to be quite effective.
